Like any breed, it had to start somewhere. Velveteen lops come from crossing a rex rabbit, either standard or mini, with a rabbit of lop ears. Mini, hollands, english and french lops are all used. It is just up to the breeder which is used as well as the size rabbit they are aiming for. However, the Velveteen Lop Rabbit Association says that the true crossing is of mini rex and english lops like the ones we have. They are not yet recognized by the American Rabbit Breeders Association but several breeders are working on a standard to present them for recognition. The working standard they are presenting is an english lop frame and ears with rex fur of a weight of 5 1/2 to 6 pounds. Colors are to be of the lop classification as there are more colors recognized in that breed than in the rex.
