Pure Pumpkin Puree (not pumpkin pie mix)
Chicken Bouillon or Broth
I made a weak chicken broth out of 1/2 t. chicken bouillon base (you can use granules or cubes or just some weakened broth, just adjust it so it is weak). To do this I mixed the 1/2 teaspoon with 2 cups of water and brought to a boil.
I added two cups of instant rice to this and let it sit. After that was cool I took about 1/2 cup of the rice/broth mix (I am dosing a labrador so you may have to adjust this amount per the size of your dog) and mixed in 1 tablespoon of pure puree pumpkin.
Give only what your dog will eat in one sitting.
Pumpkin can be used to cure diarrhea or constipation, depending on the condition that the animal is suffering.
In the end we removed all food sources for 24 hours before we started giving this mix. All we had out was water and she drank very little of that as she was so sick. We were really starting to worry about dehydration, that is why we tried this recipe, at least until we could get to the vet on Monday (never fails that one of the animals gets sick when the vet is closed and there is no emergency services - at least they don't consider this an emergency). In removing the food for 24 hours that ensures that anything that can make the dog sick or sicker is out of their system. We gave the mix in several small meals over the next two days, each time decreasing the amount of pumpkin. The diet is bland like the BRAT diet for kids with upset stomachs.
Long story short, she was better after the first feeding but we wanted to make sure (I was tired of cleaning the carpet). You can give only the one dose of pumpkin but continue with the bland diet for at least another day or two to make sure the dog is better. You can always add pumpkin to the next feeding if you have to.
