Depending on the size of the eggs and chick/chicken and the snake, would be what you come across. I know a WV farmer that lets a black snake live in her coop because they keep the mice away. But they will and do eat eggs and chicks. So here is a list of snakes I have seen around my area. For more information you can go to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_reptiles_of_West_Virginia for a complete list. Some snakes are actually beneficial eating mice and such, but you need to be sure what the snake is and keep and eye out for them eating things you don't want them to. To be sure, some birds dislike snakes and will kill any and all they come across.
